Just want them to replace the column and get it over with. They want to take off the panels and look at it again. I'm not sure about that as the sound came from the steering column (right behind the steering wheel). Called and spoke with service manager and he said that it's some panel trim pieces that are causing the issue. I asked for that bulletin for future reference (waiting for it).Īnyway, the noise went away after they fixed it but returned today. SA told me that the tech was referring to some other similar fix they did before on other vehicles. With the number someone here might be able to find out what the actual fix is. You should ask for a copy or the Service bulletin number. If I get above 30 mph or so the 'noise' goes away. No matter the direction I turn the wheels it will pop, once or twice, not close together it just pops as I turn the wheel further it will pop again. Still it must be happening to other BMWs since BMW seems to have a fix for it.īTW, when he said manual, I'm guessing it's some kind of service bulletin that BMW puts out. My car has a faint 'pop' when I turn at low speeds, I tend to feel it in the steering wheel, it feels like faint 'clicks'. Let's just say you're the 1st post I've seen about creaking steering. Hopefully it doesn't turn into anything major in the future as I will be buying it out this weekend. Is that a common issue on new cars as well? Technically the car went into the dealer 3 times and they fixed it on the 3rd try. Called the SA next day asking him to turn the car on and check the noise before I drove up (perhaps sitting in the sun for a day might cause it to come back).

They put a piece of felt tape in between per the BMW manual (not sure which manual it is). The SA explained that they found The noise was caused by pressure inside the steering column. They called the next day to let me know car was done. what kind of problem could this be and how much do you think. it occurs only when i turn the wheel to the right, and mainly when im stopped or traveling at low speeds. Talked to an SA who called the manager and he reopened the case, gave me back the loaner, and told me that he will work with the foreman to replace the column. hello i am a proud proud owner of a 94 honda accord (about 96,000 miles) and recently my steering wheel has started creaking. Once again I didn't even leave the dealer. Went to pick up the car, started driving and decided to check and the noise was still there. They did the same thing the 1st dealer did. Second dealer inspected it and SA called to let me know car is done and that it was as good as new. Unfortunately, they didn't have any loaners until the following week so I called another dealer about 16 miles further out. He said he'll talk to the manager tomorrow to replace it.įollowed up next morning and the SA told me that they will have to look at it again before seeing if they can replace it. I didn't even leave the dealer's lot so I flagged down the SA and told him the issue. Went to pick it up later that day and it was the same issue. They took it out and lubricated the parts inside. The foreman told me that it's probably due to the steering mechanism loading up. Took it in to the dealer and went on a drive. Not sure if anyone else experienced this problem.Ĭar started making this creaking noise when turning the steering wheel to the left (like a rachet noise). Never had it on my previous cars until now. I gave a little pull on the passenger's side sway bar link and it make a very similar sounding noise.Apparently it was pretty common in previous gens. I'm pretty limited on tools though so I'm likely going to have to pay someone to fix whatever it is for me.ĮDIT So a bit more internet research has turned up a lot of stuff about bushings and sway bars causing things like this.ĮDIT 2 I loosened both strut mounts and lifted both wheels off the ground. I got the same sound with the wheels off the ground.Īny ideas on what to look for next. I jacked the front end off the ground to remove weight from the wheels and rule out bad ball joints. I found the boot on one end slightly greasy but overall still intact. I started off by checking the tie rod ends. The creaking sounds like it's coming from more toward the center of the engine. I'm trying to figure out what it is but I've hit the limit of my car knowledge now.

There is a plastic bushing down there inside the silicon boot at the firewall.

Give it a good shot of lube and then turn the wheel a few times. My car has developed an annoying creaking sound when turning. Get some super lube, get under the dash and point the tube down the steering shaft into the boot.
